The Codified Language
In the book “The Four Agreements: A Toltec Wisdom Book” by Don Miguel Ruiz, one of the agreements states that one person must not use words towards another person in order to change who that person is.
As I grew I learned well that it was customary to change everything about ourselves, to obsess over frivolous situations and to associate ourselves with: models in magazines, music stars, icons within the acting world and to ensure that we belonged to the “cool crowd” at school. For years we brainwashed ourselves to believe everything but the truth. However, we are human beings that need to be nurtured and loved.
Years and years of breaking an agreement, which is clearly a human offence, is quite disturbing when thinking about the context of humanity. Imagine everybody going around and telling everybody else that they can’t do that because it doesn’t look good in public or because nobody else does it that way.
Within my own fashion of interpretation, I choose to create my form of codified text upon the surface of my canvas. I elect my words carefully and prefer to allow the viewer to look profoundly into the complex painted arrangements and to believe freely without judgment. The liberating experience is to view the work with personal freedom and the enjoyment of deciphering this form of codified language.
To follow all of these agreements according to Ruiz’s interpretation of the Toltec’s guide to personal freedom is quite a difficult feat to achieve. To succeed amongst many attempted failures is they way we may improve ourselves as human beings. As the first agreement of the four agreements states, “be impeccable with your word”, be kind and to accept your fellows as they were born to be.

El lenguaje codificado
En el libro “Los Cuatro Acuerdos: un libro de sabiduría tolteca” de Don Miguel Ruiz, uno de los acuerdos postula que una persona no debe usar palabras hacia otra persona para intentar cambiar quién es esa persona.
Mientras crecía, aprendí que es normal querer cambiar todo acerca de nosotros mismos, obsesionarnos sobre situaciones frívolas, imitar y compararnos con modelos de revistas, estrellas de música, íconos del mundo de la actuación; o relacionarnos con los estudiantes “cool” de la escuela. Durante años nos lavamos el cerebro para creer en todo excepto la verdad. Somos humanos, seres que necesitan ser nutridos y amados.
Después de años de romper los acuerdos que claramente ofendían nuestra naturaleza humana, es muy perturbador cuando una persona piensa en el contexto de humanidad. Imaginemos cuántas personas censuran conductas de otras solo porque las juzgan inapropiadas, inconvenientes o imprácticas.
Desde mi interpretación, yo elijo crear mi forma de texto codificado sobre la superficie de mi lienzo. Selecciono mis palabras con cuidado y prefiero permitir al espectador ver profundamente en el complejo de arreglos pintados e interpretarlos libremente, sin prejuicio. La experiencia es mirar a la obra con libertad personal y gozar al descifrar, de esta forma, el lenguaje codificado en la obra.
Seguir todos los acuerdos según la interpretación de Ruiz sobre la sabiduría tolteca y la guía para la libertad personal no es una meta fácil de obtener. Sin duda, para mejorar como seres humanos habrá muchos fracasos. Como indica el primero de los cuatro acuerdos: “sé impecable con tu palabra”, sé cariñoso y acepta a tus compañeros como nacieron para ser.
